Carmen was the daughter of the late Ramon and Benita Montalvo. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Bernard; sister, Petra Cruz and brother, Luis Montalvo.

Carmen retired as Director of Columbia University School of Dental Medicine. In 2011 she received her Masters of Science Degree from Columbia University. She was a hardworking individual with a love of learning and worked diligently in accomplishing her dream of higher education.
Carmen was known for her beautiful smile and positive attitude. She loved and cherished her family and was always there to offer her love and support. She would always give us great advice and was always ready to lend an ear to whomever came to her. Carmen came from humble beginnings. She lived in a small household in Puerto Rico with her parents, siblings, aunts and uncles. She had a lot of great memories growing up but was proudest when she would tell us she would wash clothes on a rock by the stream by her home. She was proud of how far she had come and we were all proud of her story. The example she showed her children and grandchildren was not where you come from but what you become. Carmen will be greatly missed by her family and friends who all adored her.
