Obituary

Bobby Cleo Crawford passed into God's hands on October 10, 2017.  He was 82 years old.  Born in Danville, VA on May 9, 1935 and was the son of the late Roy and Catherine Crawford.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 years old and received his basic training at the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, MD.  He served 20 years before retiring in 1971 as a Chief Petty Officer.  During those years, he served aboard a number of ships.  He was in the Korean Conflict; assisted in evacuating Cuban refugees during the Cuban Missile Crisis and while on the USS Dupont (DD 941) on its second tour on the "gunline" off the coast of Vietnam near the DMZ, the Ship saw live action when it was hit by an enemy shore battery.  He also was a drill instructor at Naval Recruit Training Center in Orlando, FL.  He received medals and awards which include the Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Naval Expeditionary Medal, and Good Conduct Medals with two Bronze Stars.  After his military career, he began another career at Old Dominion University with the Campus Police retiring as a Lieutenant.  After that, he worked for the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek Police Department for the next nine years retiring as a Sergeant.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sherlie; two sons, Timothy of Suffolk, VA and David of Chesapeake, VA; granddaughter, Stefanie Bustamante (Brad) of Louisburg, NC; brothers, Bennie (Marion), Wayne (Brenda) of Danville, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service with military honors will be held at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery.  Parr Funeral Home is serving the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O.
