Betty Joe Batten Rawls, 85, passed away October 7, 2011, in Suffolk, VA. Born in Gary, WVA, she was the daughter of J.E. Batten, Jr. and Ellithorpe Welch Batten. Mrs. Rawls was the widow of Dr. Charles Holland Rawls, Sr.

She was a graduate of West Virginia University and studied nursing at Duke University. Mrs. Rawls worked at Lakeview Medical Clinic with her husband. Later, she became a Registered Nurse through Old Dominion University and worked as the head nurse at Nansemond Pointe.

She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several groups. She was also a member of local garden clubs, social and service organizations. For the past sixty years, she was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the West Memorial Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Rawls is survived by a daughter, Charlotte R. Parr and husband Wayne; a daughter, Elizabeth R. Coulbourn and husband Edwin; a son, Dr. Charles H. Rawls, Jr. and wife Susan; a son, Japheth E. Rawls, III and wife Charlotte; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a brother, J. E. Batten, III and wife Donna Sue; a brother, Welch Middleton Batten; and nieces and nephews.

At her request, a private family graveside service was held at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
