Bessie Nelson McCarthy, 84, passed away March 1, 2012. She was born in Nansemond County the daughter of the late Ruth M. and Charles T. Nelson. She was predeceased by her husband, Herman R. McCarthy. She retired as a salesperson for Montgomery Ward and Leggett's Department Store. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Bessie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Steven A. and JoAnne McCarthy of Wakefield, David H. and Donna McCarthy of Newport News; grandchildren, Christopher M. and Amanda L. McCarthy; 6 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Louise G.Nelson;numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Holly Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Rescue Squad, 115 Banks St., Waverly, VA 23890. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
