Obituary

Bertha "Bert" Woodcock Poulson, 87, died on October 8, 2022 in Richmond, Virginia. Born in Atkinson, North Carolina on April 14, 1935, the daughter of Edmond Woodcock and Mary Lucille Corbett Woodcock.  She graduated from East Carolina College in 1957 with a Bachelor's degree in English and French.  She taught at various high schools in North Carolina and Virginia throughout her career, finally teaching at Suffolk High School, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Paul D. Camp Community College until her retirement.   You almost never saw her without a smile on her face and she always had time for her family, friends and students.  She was a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she was part of the Episcopal Church Women and the Alter Guild.  Her membership in the Lake Kilby Garden Club allowed her to show off her "green thumb" and love of gardening and flower arranging.   She was also a member of the Suffolk DAR Constantia Chapter,  Suffolk Republican Women's Club, The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club, Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society and Friends of Riddick's Folly.   She is survived by her daughter, Janet L. Poulson of Richmond, Virginia; her sister Linda C. Woodcock, her brother Stanley D. Woodcock both of Atkinson, NC, and her sister-in-law Barbara "Susie" Woodcock of Burgaw, NC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Melvin B. Poulson; two sisters, Mary Edna Woodcock, and Emily W. McLaurin; a brother Charles E. Woodcock; and a sister-in-law Julie J. Woodcock.

A Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 on October 19, 2022 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Suffolk, Virginia with Rev. Keith Emerson officiating.  A reception will immediately follow the service.  Burial will be private at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, Friends of Riddick's Folly or the charity of your choice.
