Barbara Lindley
Poteat
November 9, 1949 – September 28, 2022
Barbara Lindley Poteat went to be with Jesus on September 28, 2022, from her home in Smithfield. She was preceded in death by her father, James Lindley. She is survived by her husband, Lindsay Poteat, daughter, Faith Poteat DeFriese (Alan), and son, John Philip Poteat (Bethany), and her grandchildren, Joshua DeFriese (Lauren), James DeFriese, Joseph DeFriese, Eden Poteat, Addy Lin Poteat, and Ezra Poteat. She is also survived by her mother, Verlena Lindley Brammer, and brothers, David Lindley (Toni), and Richard Richardson (Inge), and one she called her "sister-friend," Sue Poteat Langdon. Barbara was saved as a child at the knees of her parents, and she was a member of First Baptist Church, Suffolk, where she sang in the choir. She served the Lord in many capacities over the years at the Peninsula Rescue Mission and in several churches. She was a social worker at the Mission, and she led choirs in three churches over the years. She worked for decades in summer camp programs for needy children. Her great loves included singing for the Lord and helping lead tours in Israel. Her great passion in life was her family. She loved being a wife, homemaker, Mom, and Gram. She taught many Bible studies over the years with Faith and her peers. In the last 20 years they were affectionately called "Gramz Girlz." The family is greatly appreciative for the end of life care provided by Marion Smith, and the hospice team of Elizabeth, Sabrina, and Kristi from Amedisys. Visitation (2:00 - 3:00) and funeral (3:00) will be held on Sunday afternoon, October 2, at First Baptist Church Suffolk, 237 N Main Street. Her son-in-law, Rev. Alan DeFriese, will officiate. Parr Funeral Home, Suffolk, has charge of the arrangements. Memorial gifts may be made to the Peninsula Rescue Mission, PO Box 377, Newport News, VA 23607 ( www.prm.info ).
