Barbara Harrell Canipe, 77, of Suffolk, VA passed away October 4, 2017. She was born in Suffolk, VA to the late William and Mildred Simmons. She is also predeceased by her first husband, W. Perry Harrell. Barbara was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church since 1971, where she was a member of the Hope Sunday school class and Winnie Rountree Circle. Barbara volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was a direct descendant of Thomas Savage and was a member of Descendants of Ancient Planters, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jamestown Society, and Union Dames. Barbara had a love of American history, was an avid gardener, and was an amateur genealogist.
Barbara is survived by her husband, B. M. Canipe; daughter, Virginia Anne Harrell Godwin and husband, Lewis; son, Walter Perry Harrell, Jr. and wife, JoAnne; step daughters, Karen C. Soblotne and husband, Larry, and Denise C. Temple and husband, David; grandchildren, Robert Lewis Godwin, Jr. (Katie), Ashley Ann Richards (Chris), and Perry Rawls Harrell; step grandchildren, Scott Wiggins (Heather), Tyler Temple, and Kristen Temple; great grandchildren, Robert Lewis Godwin, III and Brooklyn Marie Walters; step great grandchild, Gavin Wiggins and Mason Wiggins; sisters, Annette Ellis (Arthur), and Kathleen Ward; half brothers and sisters, Billy Holland (deceased), Jack Holland, Leslie Holland, Marion, and Janet; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Garza officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the residence of Anne and Lewis Godwin.
