Arthur "Monty"
Montague Mountcastle, Jr.
June 9, 1938 – June 3, 2025
Retired Major Arthur Montague (Monty) Mountcastle, Jr., a devoted veteran, accomplished aviator, and passionate advocate for safety and service, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, just days shy of his 87th birthday. He leaves behind a proud legacy of dedication, humility, and quiet generosity.
Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on June 9, 1938, Montague grew up in Suffolk, Virginia, where he developed the values that would guide him throughout his life. After graduating from Fork Union Military Academy in 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1960. He was stationed in Berlin in 1961 during the construction of the Berlin Wall, a pivotal moment in Cold War history.
In 1963, Montague completed Officer Candidate School and became a skilled pilot of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. He bravely served two combat tours in Vietnam from 1966-1967 and 1968-1969 with the 82 nd airborne division. After returning home, he studied aviation safety at Embry-Riddle University earning a BS degree in aeronautical engineering. While stationed with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Montague was awarded the prestigious James H. McClellan Award for Aviation Safety for his work.
Upon retiring from the Army in 1980, Montague continued his commitment to service as a safety engineer with Lockheed Martin, contributing to the Space Shuttle Program at Cape Canaveral, Florida. He later served as Executive Director of the Volusia Flagler Safety Council in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he dedicated more than 20 years to improving the well-being of his community.
Though he sometimes came across as stern, those close to Montague knew him as deeply kind-hearted and generous. His daughter-in-law affectionately called him a "prickly pear"—tough on the outside, but unmistakably sweet within. He was a quietly giving man, quick to lend a helping hand without seeking credit.
He enjoyed playing golf in his younger years and was a lifelong trivia enthusiast. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his father, Arthur M. Mountcastle, Sr., his mother Alma Sadler Mountcastle of Suffolk, Virginia, and his wife, Pam Mountcastle of Daytona Beach, Florida.
He is survived by his sister, Myrtle Ann Mountcastle of Suffolk, Virginia; his son, Arthur "Monty" Mountcastle III; and his beloved granddaughter, Sydney Marie Mountcastle (Daytona Beach). His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A private service will be held to honor Montague's life.
