Alton Gerlin Butler, 82, of Suffolk, VA passed away December 22, 2007. He was born in Suffolk, VA the son of the late Viola Holland Butler Jernigan and Thomas Walter Butler. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during WWII where he received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. Alton later went on to work for Briggs Motor Garage and then the State Highway Department. He retired as the owner and operator of A. G. Butler's Garage. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church.
Alton is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bernice Ruth Woolard Butler of Suffolk, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Ruth Butler Kirk and Bill of Zuni, VA; sons and daughters-in-law, Alton Ray Butler, Rayford Emerson and Frankie Butler, Philip Lee and Terrie Butler all of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Kevin Ray Butler (Cameron), Philip Lee Butler, II (Caroline), David Alton Butler, Ronnie Dean Sightler, Donnie Dean Sightler; great grandchildren, Phillip Lei Butler, Jacob Thomas Butler; sister, Evelyn Bradshaw; brothers, Wilbur Butler, James Jernigan, and Dewitt Jernigan.
A funeral service will be held Monday, December 24, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Oakland Christian Church with Rev. Mark Burns officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may join the family Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3515 Robs Dr., Suffolk, VA and other times at the residence.
